Sanders marching toward fourth title: Except for one week, Rodney Sanders led the points from start to finish in 2019 en route to capturing his third USMTS National Championship. Fast forward to 2020 and it’s déjà vu all over again.

The 30-year-old from Happy, Texas, won the first race of the 2020 campaign in the USMTS debut at the I-37 Speedway in Pleasanton, Texas, on February 28. After two races he was clinging to a one-point lead over Jason Hughes but a victory in the third race of the year set him on course to lead the points standings through today with just eight points races remaining.

In addition to the national points battle, ‘The Rocket’ leads in victory lane visits with nine wins this season and 233 feature laps as the leader. Sanders also tops the season-long FK Rod Ends Hard Charger standings. To date, he has passed 128 cars in 32 main events.

Sanders needs to average a fifth-place finish going forward—even if his closest pursuer, Dereck Ramirez, wins all eight of the remaining races—to tie Jason Hughes with a fourth USMTS crown. Only Ramirez and Hughes are still mathematically in the hunt for the 2020 title.

2020 campaign nears completion: With the recent cancellation of the Southern Dirt Track Championship at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, the USMTS lost another stop due to COVID-19. Now, following the Sept. 11-13 tripleheader through Louisiana and Texas, just two events and five nights of action remain.

Another victim of the China-born virus that invaded America, the 22nd Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree presented by Chevrolet Performance has been shortened to two days instead of three. The mega-event takes place Friday and Saturday, Sept. 25-26, at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.

The 2020 USMTS national champion will emerge from the 2nd Annual Summit Southern Nationals presented by Super Clean at the RPM Speedway in Crandall, Texas, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5-7.

For those who sadly cannot join the USMTS in person, every event can be experienced live with a Pit Pass on RacinDirt.TV https://www.racindirt.tv/.

Currently, the 2020 schedule for the Summit USMTS National Championship fueled by Casey’s is highlighted by 40 nights of racing at 25 unique dirt ovals for the 22nd season of competition for the world’s Best of the Best in dirt modified racing.
